“When you’re broke, everything is low to the ground,” says Birbiglia, 38, recalling a dingy Queens room that he called home in his mid-20s. Written and directed by and co-starring Birbiglia, the dramatic comedy follows a tight-knit New York improv troupe called The Commune, whose members are seemingly content to scrape by in humdrum day jobs as long as they can perform every night. As a member of Chicago’s Second City before he was plucked up by MADtv, Key particularly connected with his character’s struggle to follow personal ambitions, but also be there for his friends.
